A MOTHER'S KIND WORDS

By: Angela

In 2000, my son, Rudy, was in the 5th grade. He came home excited about having a mentor. Mrs. Hervey took an interest in Rudy. Mrs. Hervey has a son, Michael, who is studying to become a doctor. I was delighted that my son got Michael as a mentor.

The first day they met was pleasant. They connected like old friends. Rudy has been given opportunities to meet with Michael's family and his friends. Michael spends time with him when he is in St. Louis. They have participated in activities at Six Flags and Dave & Busters. Rudy has been on several trips to visit Michael in Washington, D.C., Virginia, Atlanta, Detroit and Chicago. Rudy's travel expenses were sponsored by the Hervey Foundation. Rudy has visited several colleges, museums and landmarks. What Rudy really likes about having a mentor is that he is treated like family. Last year, Michael gave Rudy his old computer. Rudy used the computer to complete his schoolwork.

Know my son talks about getting a part-time job when he turns sixteen to save money for college. I really appreciate Michael being Rudy's mentor because I am a single-parent. Hopefully, the Hervey Foundation will grow and other children will benefit from having a mentor. It is good to have people volunteer their time to improve a child's life and learn new things. Also, traveling with Michael has been great.

As a parent, I think that this program is an excellent opportunity for teens. This mentorship program helps young people to have a positive attitude and they are being lead in the right direction. This program has given my child, Paige, something to look forward to every month. My daughter has a role model to look up to. I am very grateful for this opportunity and hopefully this will make a change in her life.

"A Gateway to New Experiences"

The Hervey Foundation, Mentoring Program exposes children to different experiences. Without the Hervey Foundation, some young people would not receive this type of positive exposure until they become adults. For three years, my daughter, Brittany, has participated in the Hervey Foundation, mentoring program. The Hervey Foundation, experience has been beneficial to her.

 "A Positive Experience."

The Hervey Foundation mentoring program has been a positive experience for my daughter, India. India's mentor has been a strong role model in my daughter's life.  Keisha has given India an opportunity to express herself and receive special attention.  Keisha's background and experience has helped India to look at her future in a positive way.  I tell India many important things in life but her relationship with Keisha reinforces the lessons and values that I want her to learn. I appreciate what the Hervey Foundation has done for India

"I am Proud My Child is a Part of the Hervey Foundation."

I appreciate that my son, Jaron, participates in the Hervey Foundation.  The Hervey Foundation is an organization with a group of mentors who volunteer their time and energy to youth.  I am very pleased with Kendrick Watson, Jaron's mentor.  Kendrick shares his time and energy with my son. Kendrick also shows concern about Jaron's academic and social life.  They both enjoy talking about sports.

Jaron has enjoyed playing basketball since the age 7.  He now plays for McCluer High School and plans to go to the NBA.  Jaron is a honor roll student at McCluer High School. Jaron plans to major in computer information systems in college.  I'm a proud parent of my child.  I am proud he is a part of the Hervey Foundation.

 "Blessed and Grateful"

My name is Tonette and my son Tony is a mentee in the Hervey Foundation Mentoring Program.  Tony has been a part of the Hervey Foundation for about one-year.  I feel blessed and very grateful that Mrs. Hervey has welcomed Tony and I into the program with open arms during our time of need.  We feel very fortunate to have Lorenzo Johnson as Tony's mentor.  He is truly a special person, because he has taken the time to help a young man in need.  I believe the world would prosper greatly if there were more people like Rita Hervey and Lorenzo Johnson.  I want to thank both of them for everything that they have done for Tony and I.

The Hervey Foundation has been a true blessing to the Knight family.  The mentors of the Hervey Foundation give that extra hand that is greatly needed in this day to bring up teenagers in a positive environment.  A special thanks to my daughter Kamesha's mentor, Keisha Pearson, for all her hard work and dedication.  I encourage the Hervey Foundation mentoring program to keep up the good work because teens need programs like this. God Bless!

After considering many ideas on how to enrich my son's life, I found that the Hervey Foundation was exactly the solution that I needed for Codi.  I like the idea that the Hervey Foundation promotes Christian values for the children and their families.  The parent meetings are enjoyable and very informative (the food is excellent).  I appreciate the Hervey Foundation and believe that all youth could benefit from this mentoring program.

Just when I thought there was no where else to turn, God opened my eyes, held my hand and led me towards the doors of the Hervey Foundation.  As a single parent, Mr. and Mrs. Hervey have given me love, support and guidance. After my relationship with my daughter hit rock bottom, I never thought it was possible for us to get past it or move on.  Thanks to the Hervey Foundation and our love for each other, my trust in Jazzmine is growing.  I thank God, the Hervey Foundation, and myself for allowing this to happen.

I didn't know who to turn to until Mrs. Rita Hervey came into our life.  The Hervey Foundation Mentoring program is a good idea for teenagers.  It helps me to be closer to my daughter. Before joining the program, my relationship with my daughter was not that good but now it is better.  I thank Rita Hervey, Seletha Jackson, Sylvia Johnson and Alicia's mentor, Kamilah, for helping us.

MENTEE'S CORNERS

By: Rudy

When I was in the fifth grade at Griffith Elementary School, my teachers spoke highly of my good grades. Mrs. Hervey approached me with the hope of getting to know me. She asked me whether I had a mentor and what were my plans for the future. I have been actively involved with the Hervey Foundation ever since.

During the Christmas of 2001, I met my mentor, Michael. I have enjoyed the conversa- tions he and I have had. Our conversations have been beneficial because they have helped me focus on life decisions. We have talked about God, school, rap music, crime and personal responsibility. These discussions have allowed me to express myself. Travel has allowed me to see different places. I feel that travel is important because it allows me to visit different places. I've learned a lot from being able to go to Washington D.C., Boston, Massachusetts, Charlottesville, Virginia, Atlanta, Georgia and Chicago, Illinois. I am looking forward to traveling more.

I have learned how far education can take you, through conversations with my mentor and his friends. Before I meet with my mentor, I didn't know how to go about making future goals. Now I see college in my future. I see going to college as an important step to help me achieve my goals.

I think this program is a good idea because it allows a child to be able to find  someone to trust and to be comfortable enough to tell that person what is going on. I also like it because it gives me something to do once a month with the people I enjoy.

"The Hervey Foundation has Helped me to Become a Better Person."

My name is India and I am in the eighth grade.  I attend Ferguson Middle school.  My favorite subject in school is Spanish.  I like to go to the mall, the movies, talk on the phone, play on the computer, and play outside.

The Foundation has helped me to become a better person all around.  My mentor is Keisha Pearson.  My mentor and I talk a lot.  Sometimes we go to the movies and sometimes we just walk around the mall.  Keisha tells me about situations she has run into so that I will know what to do if I run into similar situations.  The Foundation has allowed me to do things that I would normally not get to do.

 "I enjoy the Hervey Foundation."

My name is Jaron, and I am 15 years old.  I'm a freshman at McCluer High School.  I have been in the Hervey Foundation since I was in the sixth grade.  I have enjoyed it because it has helped me to develop good study and social skills.  I am on the football and basketball team at McCluer.  This spring I will run track.

After high school, I plan to attend college.  I want to go to a Division 1 school so that I can get drafted to the NBA.  My goals are to get a triple-double in one of my basketball games and hit a game winning shot.  I enjoy being in the Hervey Foundation and doing activities with my mentor, Kendrick Watson.

 "No Regrets"

My name is Tony and I am a mentee in the Hervey Foundation Mentoring Program.  At first, I did not want to be in the program because I did not feel that it would be interesting.  After being in the program for a year, I think it has a lot to offer me and it's not so bad.  My mentor's name is Lorenzo Johnson.  We do interesting activities together, which are fun.  Recently, Lorenzo and I worked on jobs like cabinet work and house renovations.  He makes sure we follow safety procedures on each job we do.  Lorenzo also takes me to the theater and plays.  I enjoy going to the mall and trading card shows.  I do not regret being in the Hervey Foundation Mentorship Program.

 "Moving Ahead"

My name is Ashley, and I'm 12 years old. When I was 10 years old something happened to me that I thought I would never get over.  My mom died on October 8, 2001.

While my mom was sick, my mom's friend told me that I needed to come and stay with her.  I later learned that my mom was gone. I said "where did she go?".  My mother's friend told me that my mom had died.

Ever since then I had difficulty trusting people. Being in the Hervey Foundation has helped me to trust people again, especially Melvie.  My mentor is Melvie Nunn. My mentor and I enjoy hanging out together and going fun places.  Now, I live with my sister, brother, Grandma, and PaPa. My life is getting better!

I believe the Hervey Foundation is a very positive contribution to the teenagers of today.  The mentoring program allows me to talk to my mentor about important life issues, things I enjoy, and plans for the future. The Hervey Foundation is an aspiring program that persuades teenagers like myself to live our best lives.  I would say that this program is a very distinctive way to become a well rounded teenager of today and the successful adult of tomorrow.

The Hervey Foundation gives me the opportunity to meet and communicate with positive people. The Hervey Foundation inspires me to be a better person  than I already am.  The mentors in the program are helpful because they teach young teenagers like myself to stay out of trouble and to do something  positive with their lives.

Being apart of the Hervey Foundation has made me a better person.  It brought me a step closer to my mom and even a bigger step closer to God.

My new beginning started when I joined the Hervey Foundation Mentoring Program.  From the depths of my heart I would like to thank my mentor, Ms. Sue (Seletha Jackson) for showing me that it's okay to want God in your life, to ask  forgiveness, to love and respect yourself for who you are.  She's also helped me realize that I don't need a boy, friends or anyone else to verify my beauty.  I would also like to thank Mrs. Hervey for making this program possible.  Without Mrs. Hervey, I would still be looking for someone who has already been found- Me, the real Jazzmine LaShay Montgomery!

I'm glad I'm part of the Hervey Foundation.  God told me to be apart of the Hervey Foundation and that I would learn a lot from them.  Since I've been in the Hervey Foundation I've changed.  I don't have a boyfriend and I learned that the Hervey Foundation is good for me.  I hope to be in the Hervey Foundation next year because they teach me a lot and I can learn more from them.  I thank my mentor Kamilah for taking me places like the museum, her house and to church. I appreciate her being my mentor.
